Introduction to Nosework

Nosework , or Scent Work, is a hot new canine sport! Once you try it, you’ll see how much fun it is. It is based on the work of detection dogs. Your dog learns to find specific odors hidden in different environments. It’s an excellent sport for any dog - young dogs, old dogs or even shy dogs – and for handlers who are short on time. There is a minimum amount of monetary and time resources needed to develop a well-honed team compared to most other dog sports.

AKC trials in this sport start on Oct. 1, 2017, and UKC has a trialing and titling program up and running. Both are offered right here in greater Omaha.

In this course you will learn the basics in teaching your dog to search for specific odors and about the AKC and UKC sports programs. Class will be taught by Norine Nieman and Sharon Dowell, who are both at the Superior level (3rd level) in UKC nosework and excited to start working in AKC scent work as it launches.

  • Dogs must be at least 6 months of age and be physically sound.
  • Dogs should not be aggressive towards other dogs or people.
Students should bring to class:
  • Lots of high-value, soft, non-crumbly treats (Happy Howies rolls are a good choice)
  • A flat collar and 6-foot or 10-foot leash, no flexi-leads
  • Dog kennel (please bring your own)
Optional equipment for the first class:
  • A sports harness that will be used only for nosework
  • A 10 foot lead
  • “Birch” odor starter kit, including Birch essential oil, q-tips, hide vessel (tin), tweezers. A good choice is the Birch Target Odor Kit from Needed starter kit items will also be available in class for nominal fees. We don’t want you to spend a lot when you’re not sure yet what you need. Please make sure that if you do order supplies before class begins that you’re ordering from a company specializing in nosework/scent work because there are many different varieties of essential oils, but only specific types are used in the sport.
